Backbone

Author’s Note: This poem was written in an event in my office. The topic was “Sheroes : a woman who is your hero” as a part of a Women’s Day endeavor. I wrote the following poem taking that into account. Hope you like it!

Backbone, we need one to stand,

Support and strength, our bodies demand.

Right from the moment I learned to crawl,

My mother was my backbone, she’s above all.

Backbone, we need one to talk,

To rise to the task, to walk the walk;

Right from the moment I uttered my first letter,

My mother was my backbone, I couldn’t have asked for better.

Backbone, we need one to read,

A firm foundation, which we all need,

Right from the moment I picked up my first book,

My mother was my backbone, whatever it took

Backbone, we need one to work.

The importance of this, one can’t shirk.

Right from the moment I picked up my bag,

My mother was my backbone, watching my back.

Backbone, we need it when we are old.

It gets harder, to be strong.. or bold.

Right from that moment, when she’d be weak;

I’ll be her backbone, I’ll be her clique.
